Agriculture is the primary source of livelihood for about 58 per cent of India's population. Globally, increasing demand for agricultural products often contradicts the goal of environmental protection. The successful achievement of food security has resulted in severe damages to the environment, affecting the landscape, water, nutrients, biodiversity, etc. The relationship between agriculture and environment could be viewed as conflicting (win-lose) or as synergistic (win-win). Balancing the agriculture—-environment nexus is one of the existing greatest global challenges. Efficient and ecosystem-friendly cropping systems are increasingly studied with the goal of improving water-use efficiency and nutrient management. Yet greater efforts are required to advance the sustainability of agricultural production, including technology advancement, such as genetically modified Crops, institutional innovations regarding land tenure, and policy adjustments to encourage adoption of conservational practices. Further, we need to paid more attention on emerging issues like coping with increasing impact of climate change on agriculture and environment especially accelerating the implementation of Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA), sustainable agricultural practices, utilization of renewable energy resources, need to protect and restore ecosystems and promotion of sustainable industrialization.
New forms of agriculture are needed that support a wide range of environmental services, are resilient to climatic and other external shocks, and are ecologically efficient in use of resources. To meet this challenge new science, new partnerships and modes of collaboration, and improved innovation systems will be needed. Hence, the proposed 4” National Conference on “Frontiers in Ecobiological Sciences and its Applications (FESA— 2019) Theme: Agriculture, Ecosystems and Environment” focus on the role of biological and environmental research and its technological advancements which will help to attain the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) proposed by United Nations in terms of increases in crop and livestock production to meet demand of more than 9 billion people by 2050. It also serves as a good platform for the young students and researchers' academicians, industrialists, policy makers, government, and non-government organizations to participate and come out with novel ideas for sustainable development.
